Brother is a trusted brand that creates top-notch, award-winning products. Their printers, inks, and toners are some of the best in the industry. If you’re working with a Brother printer, there are a few good reasons why it is best for you to go with genuine Brother cartridges:
While Brother recommends their original inks and toners for the highest quality prints, non-genuine or compatible inks/toners may be good alternatives for some users.
Compatible and remanufactured inks/toners have their own advantages as well as disadvantages:
Compatible inks/toners are products made by other companies for other printers or are designed to be generic, fitting multiple kinds of machines. The advantage is that they may be cheaper or more easily accessible. The risk is that these cartridges are not specifically designed for Brother printers, which could cause leaks, streaking, or damage to the machine.
Remanufactured inks/toners are usually genuine cartridges that have been recycled, cleaned, refilled with similar ink, and tested for quality. Since they use the original name-brand cartridges, they are likely to fit your printer and provide good prints. But because they may not be filled with the same ink/toner, there may be some compromise in terms of vibrancy and clarity of the printout.
Counterfeit inks/toners are designed to look like the genuine products but they are not made by the original brand manufacturer. These are typically offered at a deeply discounted price, but are usually poorly manufactured and could result in bad printouts and machine damage. Counterfeit products are never encouraged.
Replacing toner cartridges can seem a bit intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but it is generally an easy process.
When your machine alerts you that it’s time to replace the toner cartridge, follow these steps for the best results:
Why does my Brother printer keep saying replace toner?
When it is almost time to replace your toner cartridge, you will receive alerts from your printer – first that the toner is running low, and then again when it runs out. Make sure you get a replacement cartridge at the moment you get the first alert, so you are well prepared when it completely runs out. Running your printer with an empty toner cartridge can cause damage to your machine, so remember to replace the cartridge promptly.
When do I replace a toner cartridge?
There are two ways you can keep track of your toner’s remaining lifespan.
The first way is to check the packaging of your toner cartridge to find how many pages (on average) the cartridge can print before running empty. You can use this to estimate approximately when the cartridge will need to be replaced. This is great if you want to set up automatic orders for refills.
The other way is to simply wait for your machine to notify you. The prompts will say “toner low” or “replace toner” as the cartridge is close to running out.
Before installation, you’ll need to prep your new cartridge for the printer. How do you prep your toner cartridge?
Preparing a new toner cartridge can be a bit messy. Be sure to have a trash can close by that you can work over to prevent stains on the carpet or other surfaces. DO NOT prep the cartridge before it is needed. Opening or prepping a cartridge before it needs to go into the machine can result in a shortened lifespan.
Are compatible toner cartridges any good?
There are advantages and disadvantages to using compatible toner cartridges. Brother recommends that you use only original cartridges for the benefit of your printer and the quality of printouts. If you want to use compatible cartridges, be sure to do your research to find the best alternatives that suit your printer model.
How do I know if I need a new toner cartridge?
Your machine will alert you when your cartridge begins to run low. Running your machine with an empty cartridge can cause the machine to overheat and be irreparably damaged, so be sure to replace the cartridge once the alerts come up.
How long do Brother toner cartridges last
On the packaging for your toner cartridge, you can find information on how many pages each cartridge yields. Compare this number with how many pages you print daily/monthly, and you can estimate how long the cartridge will last.
